The Old World Babblers

The Old World babblers or Timaliidae are  mostly passerine birds. There are 9 species in Singapore according to some records.

White-crested Laughingthrush and Hwamei are escapees. I never seen Hwamei before, only encountered white-crested laughingthrush many times, they are mainly seen at Bukit Batok Nature Park, Kent Ridge Park, Hindhede Nature Park, Dairy Farm Nature Park and along the Green corridor. Another escapee species The Black-throated Laughingthrush have long been sighted throughout Singapore at different locations: Telok Blangah Hill Park, Labrador Park, around the green corridor area, Cony island and Lorong Halus.

White-crested Laughingthrush, one of my favorite local birds, they are very distinctive with white hood and raised crest. I like its broad and elongated black eye-mask too. There are popular caged bird species, and it is likely that individuals who escaped or were voluntarily released during religious practices and become well-established In Singapore.

The other Common resident breeder is Pin-striped Tit-Babbler, can be easily spotted at these locations: Central Catchment Forest, Thomson Nature Park, Winsor Nature Park, Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, Dairy Farm Nature Park, Bukit Batok Nature Park, Singapore Botanic Gardens and Sentosa.

The Striped Tit-Babbler,  Easily recognized with  their characteristic calls and habit of hanging around forest edges, always found busily jumping up and down among the branches.

The rest of the babblers are not easy to find as they hide deep in the forests. Hope I will uncheck the list in sooner future. They are:

  • Short-tailed Babbler
  • Abbott's Babbler
  • The Chestnut-winged Babbler
  • White-chested Babbler
  • Moustached Babblers
