Thailand Bulbul Diaries: Songbirds of the Forest Canopy

Meet the cheerful songbirds that fill Thailand’s forests with their lively calls — the bulbuls!
From the lowlands of Kaeng Krachan to the highlands of Chiang Mai, these feathered residents are always around if you stop and listen.

Some are bold and noisy, like the Sooty-headed Bulbul, while others like the Flavescent and Buff-vented stay tucked in the leaves. Each one has its own rhythm and charm.

Here are my  little collection of the bulbuls I’ve encountered on my journeys — simple, familiar, yet full of personality.

🔸Black-crested bulbul
📍Kaeng Krachan National Park, Thailand

🔸Black-crested bulbul
📍Khao Yai National Park, Thailand

A burst of energy and a voice to match! The charismatic Black-crested Bulbul (Rubigula flaviventris) shows off both flair and fire — one moment mid-flight, the next mid-song.This individual features a distinct red throat patch, a trait seen in certain subspecies found in Thailand. A beautiful example of regional variation within the species!

🔸 The Streak-eared Bulbul, always the first to show up when there’s fruit around.
📍Kaeng Krachan National Park, Thailand

🔸 The Stripe-throated Bulbul, quietly handsome with that soft yellow throat.
📍Kaeng Krachan National Park, Thailand

🔸White-headed Bulbul – rare and elegant, with a clean contrast of white and black
  📍Chiang Mai. Doi Ang Khang

🔸 Sooty-headed Bulbulbold and vocal with its black cap
📍Chiang Mai. Doi Ang Khang

🔸 Red-whiskered Bulbulstylish with its cheek patch and crest
  📍Chiang Mai. Doi Ang Khang

🔸 Mountain Bulbuloften found in cooler forests, soft-toned and graceful
  📍Chiang Mai. Doi Ang Khang

🔸 Baker’s Bulbul a rarer find, known for its subtle tones and forest-loving habits
📍Kaeng Krachan National Park, Thailand

🔸Grey-eyed Bulbul – often underestimated, but full of energy and attitude. Look closely and you'll see those pale eyes watching sharply — especially when it's mid-air catching its prey!
📍Kaeng Krachan National Park, Thailand

Puff-throated Bulbul (Alophoixus pallidus)

Photographed in Doi Inthanon National Park, Chiang Mai (Jan 2025), this bulbul caught my eye with its distinctive white throat tufts and upright crest. Often seen in the mid-storey of forest edges, the Puff-throated Bulbul is both vocal and alert, yet can vanish quickly into thick vegetation. I was lucky to catch this individual in good light, perched momentarily on a twisted vine.

     And a shy one — Buff-vented bulbul, which I didn't get a shot.
