The Colorful World of Bee-eaters – From Singapore To Thailand

There’s something truly magical about bee-eaters. With their iridescent plumage, agile flight, and elegant perching posture, they are the living brushstrokes of the avian world. On my recent photography outings in Thailand, I had the joy of encountering three dazzling species — each with its own personality and charm. Paired with two more species photographed in Singapore, here’s my collection of these vibrant bee-eaters.

🟢 Blue-bearded Bee-eater (Nyctyornis athertoni)

📍 Khao Yai National Park, Thailand
📅 2025 Apr 29

The largest of all bee-eaters, the Blue-bearded stuns with its turquoise “beard” and powerful stance. Unlike its more social cousins, this species prefers solitude, quietly observing from shadowy perches deep in the forest.

We were lucky to witness a special moment — the Blue-bearded Bee-eater returning to its nest cavity at Khao Yai, food in beak. A rare glimpse into their nesting behavior, and such a joy to document this vibrant beauty in action.
🔴 Red-bearded Bee-eater (Nyctyornis amictus)

Bright, bold, and theatrical – this bird looks like it walked off a painter’s palette. I was lucky to watch them hunting large insects under the dappled forest light. Their flashy appearance is matched by their stealth and precision.

📍 Kaeng Krachan National Park

🟠 Chestnut-headed Bee-eater (Merops leschenaulti)
📍 Khao Yai National Park, Thailand 📅 2025 Apr 29

These social acrobats often gather in small groups, performing mid-air twists and turns to catch bees. I witnessed an adorable moment of courtship feeding – a true testament to their gentle and affectionate behavior.

"Guys, seriously? I’m right here."
When you're third-wheeling and the couple gets romantic… 😅

🔵 Blue-throated Bee-eater (Merops viridis)
📍 Singapore Punngol Settlement

With electric blue throats and chestnut crowns, these common resident bird never fail to excite local birders. Found near open woodlands and coastal areas, they add a tropical splash to Singapore’s urban wilderness.

🟢 Blue-tailed Bee-eater (Merops philippinus)
📍 Singapore Hampstead Wetlands Park

Perched with elegance and a splash of tropical brilliance. From its vibrant blue tail to that sharp red eye, this bee-eater is a true gem of open woodlands and wetlands.

From Singapore to Thailand, these little bursts of color never fail to brighten my day.
Hope you enjoyed the journey too.
